A Tribe Called Quest – We Got If From Here..Thank You 4 Your Service
Producers: A Tribe Called Quest
Features: Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, Andre 3000, Elton John
It almost seems surreal to say it, but it’s true, a new Tribe Called Quest album is here. We Got It From Here..Thank You 4 Your Service marks the Tribe’s first full-length album in nearly 20 years, 18 in fact since 1998’s The Love Movement. Recorded in near-complete secrecy over the last two years, the project also includes contributions from recently-deceased bandmate Phife Dawg, who died earlier this year back in March.
Despite not releasing new music in over two decades, the Tribe Called Quest sound remains, unfazed and uninterested in the rap sounds of today. The album is a standalone nod at the 90’s, with jazzed beats riddled with samples and vocal loops, with Q-Tip’s velvety delivery draped over the top. To compliment the nostalgic production, the lyricism (‘Why y’all cool with the fuckery / Trump and SNL hilarity / Troublesome times kid, no times for comedy’) and chemistry between members remains as tight as it sounded back in 1991. And with that, the guest spots across the project are as seamless as I’ve seen in a long time, with Kendrick Lamar and Anderson Paak.’s contributions some of the most memorable among the album.
With the Tribe’s sixth and final studio album, there are still enough reasons to call it alternative rap. From the acid-draped, Tame Impala-recalling Enough!!, to the riff-laden, Anderson Paak.-featuring Movin’ Backwards, We Got It From Here points at the sounds of 2016, and collides it with the 90’s Native Tongues bounce. From both a productional and lyrical perspective, A Tribe Called Quest sound as sharp as they ever have, like they’d never been away. A welcomed return, and subsequent send-off, from one of hip-hop’s most essential artists, We Got It From Here..Thank You 4 Your Service is another accomplished release from A Tribe Called Quest.
