.

20. Mura Masa – LoveSick (ft ASAP Rocky)
Breakthrough single from Mura Masa, featuring a video teeming with theatrical narration and undisguised aura of London.

.

19. Lil Yachty – 1 Night
It pains me to put someone like Lil Yachty in a list of anything that isn’t critical, but 1 Night puts 2016 and its meme-centred social media culture into a music-assisted compilation, colliding it with glitch art and grainy copy-pasta.

.

18. Charli XCX – After The Afterparty (ft Lil Yachty)
Dripping with neon, cluttered with faux pas, and teeming with inappropriate infidelities, Charli XCX‘s purposely tainted image lives on.

.

17. Solange – Cranes In The Sky
My preference when it comes to the Knowles sisters, a beautifully shot, image-changing, and headline-stealing effort from Solange.

.

16. Massive Attack – Come Near Me (ft Ghostpoet)
The first of many Massive Attack videos to feature on this list. Sinister, haunting, unsettling, and interpretive, Come Near Me encapsulates the band’s image to a tee.

.

15. The xx – On Hold
As their social media channels and subsequent interviews would suggest, The xx have gone through a lot and now made amends, On Hold is a joyous visual display of this.

.

14. Miike Snow – Genghis Kahn
Retroed and glitch art-esque feat from electro-synth pop crossover Miike Snow, complete with evil villain lair.

.

13. Pup – Sleep In The Heat
A masterclass of condensed storytelling starring one of 2016’s biggest breakthrough stars, Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard.

.

12. The Chemical Brothers – Wide Open (ft Beck)
The Chemical Brothers are no stranger to the art of music videos, and the incredible Wide Open is no different.

.

11. Justice – Fire
Susan Sarrandon is electric in French electro duo Justice’s eventual return to form.

.

10. M.I.A. – Borders
Powerfully political and controversy crammed as always from M.I.A., spawned legal battles with PSG and Fly Emirates.

.

9. Massive Attack – Voodoo In My Blood (ft Young Fathers)
Starring Rosamnund Pike, Voodoo In My Blood was another visual feasts from trip hop pioneers Massive Attack.

.

8. Francis and the Lights – Friends (ft Bon Iver & Kanye West)
Simple studio backdrop with excellently articulated choreography, camoes from Bon Iver and Kanye West top off Francis & The Lights’ breakthrough single.

.

7. DJ Shadow – Nobody Speak (ft Run The Jewels)
Run The Jewels‘ excellent collaboration with DJ Shadow was topped off with one of the year’s best videos.

.

6. Radiohead – Daydreaming
Recalling the eery excellence of Videotape, Thom Yorke‘s bewildered wandering compliments the sombre chill of A Moon Shaped Pool’s second single.

.

5. Kanye West – Fade
This video is indescribable. The control, sex, power and dominance Teyana Taylor exudes on Kanye West’s Fade is incomparable to the poppy predictable routines in most pop videos.

.

4. Massive Attack – Take It There (ft Tricky)
Another video from the elusive trip hop duo, Massive Attack’s first of many videos of the year was the topper.

.

3. OK Go – The One Moment
Always a shoe-in for videos the year, famed music video pioneers Ok Go return with an explosive video for The One Moment.

.

2. Jamie xx – Gosh
Astronomical scale, runaway imagination, and extravagant themes from The xx frontman. Directed by Romain Gavras, starring Shaun Ross.

.

1. Leon Bridges – River
Hands down the visual moment of 2016 within music, I’ll let the video itself do the talking.
